Trick your dog-hating friends by inviting them to read the name of this movie aloud. Okay, maybe it was a little too reliant on tropes, but Wes Anderson’s Japan-by-numbers claymation film Isle Of Dogs was one of the more original and fun animated films of the past few years (although would’ve been way more sick if Anderson made a flick about the real Isle Of Dogs… shout to Trim and the Canary Wharf / Tower Hamlets massif). Easy on the eyes with an equally tantalizing score courtesy of frequent Anderson collaborator, French-Greek composer Alexandre Desplat (The Shape Of Water, The Grand Budapest Hotel), with Kaoru Watanabe handling the taiko drumming. Japanese cinephiles will appreciate the inclusion of a few classic cues: “Kikuchiyo’s Mambo” from Seven Samurai and “Kosame No Oka” from Drunken Angel (also “Midnight Sleighride” from 1934 Soviet comedy Lieutenant Kijé). 180g black vinyl pressing with 8”x8” booklet containing stills from the film and album credits.
