"Recorded in 1963, The Kicker was actually vibraphonist Bobby Hutchersonâs first session as a leader for Blue Note, but for reasons lost to time it was shelved, and instead Hutchersonâs album Dialogue was released as his debut two years later. For unknown reasons, label owner Alfred Lion shelved over a hundred Blue Note sessions recorded in the 1950s and 60s, including multiple albums by Jimmy Smith, Hank Mobley, Grant Green, and Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers. Thankfully, the majority of those 'lost' albums were eventually liberated from the vaults, including The Kicker. First released in 1999, The Kicker is a sequel to guitarist Grant Greenâs masterpiece Idle Moments, which was recorded one month earlier with the exact same personnel." - Blue Note Records
