Chaz Bundick Meets The Mattson 2: Star Stuff (Toro Y Moi, Colored Vinyl) Vinyl LP
Jazzy and psych excursionsĀ from Chaz Bundick and twin brothersĀ The Mattson 2. After wowing us with several albums of slick R&B-infused don't-call-it-chillwave indie pop as Toro Y Moi and flipping the script on a handful of disco-fied house 12"sĀ as Les Sins, Bundick continues to demonstrate his versatility with Star Stuff, a new record produced in collaboration with Jonathan and Jared Mattson. The project started withĀ BundickĀ in more of a producer role, but the trio's chemistry naturally drew himĀ out from behind the boards toĀ join the Mattsons on vocal and instrumental duties. The result is a refreshingly modern and poppy marriageĀ of psych and jazz fusion, recallingĀ Bob James on the swirling, rhodes-laced jazz funk of "Cascade", Pat MethenyĀ on the virtuosic jazz guitar-led "Don't Blame Yourself" and the sleepy drums and ring-modulator synth of Broadcast on "Disco Kid". Star Stuff is a proggy, mostly instrumental affair, butĀ Bundick's signature vocal performance on the title track is a great entry point for fans ofĀ Toro Y Moi.
