Echo & The Bunnymen: The John Peel Sessions 1979-83 (Indie Exclusive 180g) Vinyl 2LP
âPlease everybody, if we didnât do everything we couldâve done, we tried, etc.â - note from the band to John Peel & staff
âWithout John Peel sessionsâ guitarist Will Sergeant explains, âEcho And The Bunnymen, in my opinion, would not exist!â The Liverpool post-punk icons recorded a number of studio sessions for the famed BBC producer, and this set collects material from that finest sliver of their career: 1979 to 1983. âVilliers Terrace,â âStars Are Starsâ and âPictures On My Wallâ were all worked out in Peelâs studio before they appeared on the Bunnymenâs 1980 debut Crocodiles; likewise âNocturnal Me,â âOcean Rain,â âMy Kingdomâ and Donnie Darko highlight âThe Killing Moonâ (donât front - if youâre under 35, this was how you found out about this band, case closed) all appear here in nascent form ahead of their more polished versions on the Ocean Rain album. Tried and true cuts like âVilliers Terrace,â âTurquoise Daysâ and âOver The Wallâ sound so much more tactile and urgent here, stripped to their essence with very little more than guitar, bass, drum machine and Ian McCullochâs peerless shrieking. Not to mention THE definitive versions of âThat Golden Smileâ and âI Bagsy Yours.â 21 tracks in total, spread across two LPs housed in gatefold sleeve with extensive liner notes, released on the bandâs boutique Korova imprint. Iâve never quite loved any proper Bunnymen LP from start to finish, but this is near perfect. Recommended.
