Cosmic Slop; the true sleeper in the early P-Funk catalog, one of their coolest and most inventive joints top-to-bottom. It was a commercial failure; there’s no “Knee Deep” or “Flashlight” here, but many of the tunes went on to become staples in their live shows. Topically, the album is all over the place - there’s political stuff (“March To The Witch’s Castle”), sex pervert anthems (“Nappy Dugout,” “No Compute”), social commentary (“Cosmic Slop,” “Trash A-Go-Go”) and love songs (“This Broken Heart,” “Can’t Stand The Strain”) - all underpinning that signature P-Funk groove. It’s also their most concise collection of songs, with no track stretching past the six minute mark. Best to just take the afternoon off, climb up in the Nappy Dugout and and let the weird funky vibe soak all the way in. Yellow and blue marble colored vinyl housed in repro gatefold with all Pedro Bell’s funny little cartoons and liner notes intact, recommended.
