Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou: The Skeletal Essences of Afro Funk 1969-1980 Vol.3 2LP

More goodness from the folks at Analog Africa. The Skeletal Essences of Afro Funk 1969-1980 marks the third installment in the series from the Germany based label that celebrates the 'Tout-Puissant' Orchestre Poly-Rythmo De Cotonou. The legendary band from Benin, led by vocalist and guitarist Melome Clement, boasts an extensive back catalog that is filled with surprises. Anchored by the rhythm section of drummer Leopold Yehouessi and bassist Gustave Bentho the band combined the rhythms such as sato and sakpato from the local Vodoun religion with a myriad of international musical influences. The Orchestre took cues from Cuban son and popular African dance music to the funk of James Brown and the psychedelic sounds coming out of the US. The tracks featured here have all seen previous release on small West African labels between the years of 1969-1980, but good luck tracking those down. The Skeletal Essences of Afro Funk 1969-1980 is a definite must for any fan of West African funk and rock as well as those looking to expand their horizons beyond Fela's Afrobeat.
