Mexican DJ-producer Rebolledo follows up his 2011 debut Super Vato and the highly regarded 2014 mix Momento Drive with a second album, Mondo Altered. The Xalapa native, who’s also known as one-half of Pachanga Boys (alongside Superpitcher), designed the release like a mixtape, with “rock-drenched drumming, sinister atmospheres, raw synth textures, exciting peaks and foggy bottoms” connecting and flowing through in one swift motion, an experience akin to driving a car, a Porsche 928 (kudos for the Risky Business nod for the cover) most likely, through a long tunnel. In the course of the 9 tracks, Rebolledo is in complete control, building up or breaking down soundscapes and moods at a pace that he sees fit (the opener “Here Comes The Warrior (Super short version) clocks in at 14:55, enough said), and the hypnotic, infectious grooves roll along like a “soundtrack for a movie that doesn’t exist.” It’s a sonic journey backed by an original, off-kilter brand of Rebolledo’s techno/electronic dance, and this 3LP + CD release by way of Hippie Dance, Pachanga Boys’ own imprint, is the best way to experience it.
