Roy Haynes Quartet: Out Of The Afternoon Vinyl LP
Official reissue of an early Impulse standout from accomplished drummer Roy Haynes. Out Of The Afternoon was his first and only record as a leader on Creed Taylorās iconic imprint, but Haynes became a lifetime member of the club after playing on Oliver Nelsonās Blues And The Abstract Truth and Ray Charlesā Genius + Soul = Jazz, some of the labelās first hit records. Out Of The Afternoon is one of those perfectly listenable jazz albums you can put on any time any place andĀ feel the vibe elevate. Haynesā drumming is intricately textured and on point throughout, but honestly,Ā this isĀ Roland Kirkās albumĀ as much asĀ anyone elseās. Apart from his virtuosic lines on the tenor sax as well as his bizarre 1920s Buescher alto and Saxello soprano models, C flute and nose flute (your guess is as good as mine) the homie does it like this without ever devolving into atonal skronking or Ornette Coleman-esque next shit (here's a real WTF factoid for you -Ā a certain late night host once toured with Kirk as hisĀ supporting act and was frequently introduced by Kirk asĀ "a young brother who knows the black experience and knows all about the white devils... please welcome Jay Leno!"). Tommy Flanagan and Henry Grimes shine on piano and bass, respectively. This 2019 pressing on Impulse features mono sound, just like the original, with repro Impulse jacket + printed insert. Recommended.
