Sault: Untitled (Black Is) Vinyl 2LP
Sault came out of nowhere less than two years ago and has already churned out 4 amazing records, this being #3. Youāve seen it before: anonymous musical collective, pitch black artwork, ālet the music speak for itselfā,Ā etc⦠I really didnāt want to like this as much as I do.Ā EachĀ albumĀ is highly approachable and devoid of pretense, executed entirely on their own terms.Ā Thereās so much ground covered, from afrobeat and samba to vintage funk and AM soul to golden era rap and Chicago house; itās safe to say whoeverās involved have spent their lives devouring and mastering these styles. This sorta quells my 10+ year desire for a new Sa-Ra record, although Sault donāt really sound anything like them. Check outĀ "Hard Life," "Wildfires," "Sorry Ain't Enough," "Bow" (with Michael Kiwanuka) and "Eternal Life." Bonus points for the mastering which feels lightweight and unoppressive. These have been increasingly hard to get ahold of, especially in North America, so get on top of it. Recommended.
