Townes Van Zandt is an American music icon. From 1968 to 1973 he single-handedly established the canon of contemporary folk music - his originals didn't perform as well as they could due to personal and market conditons, but subsequent cover versions continue to bubbling up through the charts. Most of Van Zandt’s life was spent on the road, a hard-knock existence that led to a series of drug addictions, alcoholism, and a diagnosis of bipolar disorder. These factors make it unsurprising that he suffered an untimely death, but his catalog will inspire, beguile, and soothe listeners now and into the future. Classic tunes such as “Pancho and Lefty”, “For The Sake of the Song”, “Tecumseh Valley”, “Rex’s Blues”, and more are included on this collection, expertly compiled by Fat Possum Records, a label featuring many groups that demonstrate a clear influence from the man’s work. This album is pressed on double black vinyl and is packaged in a gatefold sleeve.
