On There's A Riot Going On, the Hoboken trio of Ira Kaplan, Georgia Hubley, and James McNew take full control of their sound, literally and figuratively, as a sonic reaction to the times. Yo La Tengo distills their music to the raw essence here, doing everything themselves in the rehearsal studio - no rehearsing, no engineer, no complicated gear - just pure feeling and emotion (and a little help from John McEntire on post mixing). The resulting songs came together in long stretches, with sometimes over a year between parts, but all very much worth it in the end.
